Multi-step equations: combine like terms
Printable practice with an answer key the engine computes, at three levels, in as many versions as you need.
Problem types
- combine like terms first: 2x + 3x + 4 = 19
- x on both sides: 5x + 3 = 2x + 12
- many terms on both sides: 4x + 2 + 5x − 5 = −7 + 3x − 8
- a distributed term, x on both sides: 2(x + 3) = 5x − 9
Sample Sheet · Level 1
- 4x − 2 + x = −12
- 8x − 6x + 8 = 16
- 2x + 6 + x = −18
- 9x − 6x + 7 = −2
- 11x − 6 = 9x − 16
- 5x − 7 = x + 17
- 7x − 3 = 2x − 33
- 6x + 3 = 2x + 35
Answer key
- x = −2
- x = 4
- x = −8
- x = −3
- x = −5
- x = 6
- x = −6
- x = 8
Sample Sheet · Level 3
- 10x − 3x − 22 = −183
- −25 = 9x − 7x + 3
- 7 + 11x = 14 + 9x
- 4x − 6 = 9x + 21
- 4(x − 2) = 5x − 32
- x + 4 + 6 − 2x − 4x = −7x + 28
- 5(x + 5) = 9x + 35
- −9 − 11x + 9x + 12 − 7x = 18 + x − 8x
Answer key
- x = −23
- x = −14
- x = 72 = 312
- x = −275 = −525
- x = 24
- x = 9
- x = −52 = −212
- x = −152 = −712
