Writing y = mx + b
Printable practice with an answer key the engine computes, at three levels, in as many versions as you need.
Problem types
- from the slope and the y-intercept: slope 3, y-intercept (0, −2)
- from the slope and a point: slope 2, through (1, 3)
- from two points: through (1, 3) and (3, 7)
- horizontal line: through (−2, 4) and (3, 4)
- vertical line: through (2, 1) and (2, 6)
- from a graph: a line through (0, 1) and (2, 5) on the grid
- from a story: A gym charges $30 to sign up and $15 each month.
Sample Sheet · Level 1
- slope −2, y-intercept (0, 7)
- slope 5, y-intercept (0, −4)
- A water tank drains at a steady rate. It holds 70 gallons at the start. It drains 3 gallons each minute. Let x be the number of minutes and y the water left in gallons.slope = per ; y-intercept (0, ) means
- slope 5, through (3, 6)
- slope 3, through (3, 1)
- through (4, 6) and (6, 12)
- through (3, 19) and (7, 3)
Answer key
- y = −2x + 7
- y = 5x − 4
- y = −3x + 70
slope = −3 gallons per minute; (0, 70) means the water in it at the start - y = 3x − 1
- y = 5x − 9
- y = 3x − 8
- y = 3x − 6
- y = −4x + 31
Sample Sheet · Level 3
- slope −32, y-intercept (0, 5)
- slope 0, through (3, 4)
- slope 54, through (−3, 3)
- through (−7, 12) and (−7, 13)
- through (−6, 12) and (−3, 13)
- through (−1, −3) and (−1, 2)
- A student saves the same amount of money each week. The student saves $11 each week. After 2 weeks, the student has $62. Let x be the number of weeks and y the money saved in dollars.slope = per ; y-intercept (0, ) means
Answer key
- y = −32x + 5
- y = 4
- y = 54x + 274
- y = −13x − 1
- x = −7
- y = 13x + 14
- x = −1
- y = 11x + 40
slope = 11 dollars per week; (0, 40) means the money the student started with
